How to Bring the Internet Back Up⚓︎
Summary⚓︎
This will serve as a brief troubleshooting guide to restore internet connectivity.
Considerations⚓︎
- Connectivity hinges on the following devices:
- Verizon Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
- pfSense (Netgate XG-7100)
- Ubiquiti Unifi Access Point(s) (AP-AC Pro)
Scenarios⚓︎
Internet is down, but pfSense is reachable⚓︎
- Check if pfSense is accessible via https://192.168.1.1. If so, login with admin credentials.
- In the main menu, select Diagnostics --> Reboot.
- Wait for connectivity to restore (approx. 5 mins)
Internet is down and pfSense is not reachable⚓︎
- Open network closet and look for a device that says Netgate.
- Are there any lights on it?
- Yes?
- See below.
- No?
- Unplug the device and plug it back in. If power is restored to the device, wait approx. 5 mins and check connectivity again.
Internet is up, but unable to reach any services (Plex, Ubiquiti gear, etc)⚓︎
- Check if pfSense is accessible via https://192.168.1.1. If so, login with admin credentials.
- On the home screen, look for Interfaces and take note of the WAN IP address.
- In the same area, you'll see Dynamic DNS Status, and should see the Cached IP address should match the WAN IP address.
- If the Cached and WAN IP addresses don't match, then Dynamic DNS (Cloudflare) has not updated with the correct DNS information.
- Try forcing the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) to update by rebooting pfSense
- In the main menu, select Diagnostics --> Reboot.
- Should this not automatically update the DDNS IP address, further troubleshooting will need to be performed through Cloudflare.
- Try forcing the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) to update by rebooting pfSense
