End-of-Life Disaster Response⚓︎
First and foremost, I'm so sorry that you're reading this. Please know how much I love you and how deeply I miss you. There's a lot I want to share, but the most important thing right now is making sure people know.
Warning
Until I'm gone, this should be considered a work in progress. Use the following information in conjunction with the information found on this page.
Critical Information⚓︎
Everything below is important, but some information is more important than others. While it's written throughout the document in detail, I'm consolidating what you definitely need to know in this section.
| Item | Link | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Paperless-ngx | paper.levine.io | All physical documentation now lives here |
| Safe Combination | Physical Security | Access code for physical security |
| Financial Overview | Monarch Money | Personal finance and budgeting overview |
| Life Insurance | Life Insurance | Claims and benefits |
| Credit Cards | Credit Cards | Financial responsibilities |
Notifying People⚓︎
At the time of this writing, look in the Beeper app. It's the central location for all chat platforms. If for any reason this becomes dated, look in the following apps on my phone and see who I've spoken to within the last 6 months:
- Android Messages
- Phone
- Signal
Then let my job know by contacting the following people:
- Scott Brown (scb2010@med.cornell.edu)
- Steven Quinn (stq4002@med.cornell.edu)
My laptop can be used for this, or you can send with your email address; your choice.
Physical Security⚓︎
You already know all about [SimpliSafe] so I won't go into it too much, but a few things to know:
- Phone: 1-888-910-1458
- Safe Word: Jackson
- Master PIN: 2014
- Duress PIN: 1987
The alarm permit is required by Oyster Bay. I get it through Nassau County Police Dept. Every renewal is for a 2 year cycle.
Garage Safe
- Safe combo:
30 -- 80 -- 50 -- 60 - Procedure:
- TURN RIGHT - Stopping when 30 comes the Fourth time to mark at top of dial.
- TURN LEFT - Stopping when 80 comes the Third time to mark at top of dial.
- TURN RIGHT - Stopping when 50 comes the Second time to mark at top of dial.
- TURN FULL LEFT - Slowly until dial reaches 60 and/or positive stopping point and open safe.
Financials⚓︎
I've provided you with access to Monarch Money, which provides an extremely comprehensive overview of the bulk of our finances. Assume that this information is by and large up to date, but always reference the actual institutions accordingly. This also at the time of this writing doesn't include any of your accounts.
Bank Accounts⚓︎
Consider the following an updated list, although this doesn't include any accounts that you may have for work such as for your retirement.
Accounts
- Certificate of Deposit (CD)
- Checking
- Money Market
- Grantor Trust
- Dave's Checking
- Dave's Savings
- Jackson's Performance Savings
- Jackson's Savings
- Joint Account
- Sienna's Savings
Life Insurance⚓︎
I get this through Weill Cornell. When contacting them, they'll discuss any details with you. Harold may have other things setup that I'm not too familiar with. Additional information that I know of regarding any of that can be found on the life insurance page and should be used as a starting point.
Investments⚓︎
At the time of this writing, this is what we have squirreled away. Always reference the account websites for the most up to date information.
Accounts
- Retirement Plan for Faculty & Exempt Employees
- Voluntary Employee Retirement Plan
- Series I bond for Jackson Levine
- Series I bond for Sienna Levine
- Brokerage Account
- Dave Levine Roth IRA
- Maria Sicuranza Levine Roth IRA
- Jackson T Levine 529 College Savings Account
- Sienna C Levine 529 College Savings Account
Financial Advisor⚓︎
We don't have one, per se, but I'd recommend contacting Vanguard and/or Julianne and speaking with them about how to appropriately invest going forward.
Accountant⚓︎
Our accountant, Julianne Ruggiero, can likely help you figure out a lot of things and perhaps give you advice on anything I missed. I think you have her contact information already, but if not, here it is:
- Phone: (516) 351-0154
- Email: julianne.ruggiero@jvrcpa.com
Output⚓︎
This is the section with bills and things that need to be paid. Everything is on auto-pay but check my email and credit card statements regularly to make sure everything is still in good shape. Of course, update and/or close them as needed.
Also, since most payments for the house are made through our joint account at Capital One, just make sure there's always money in it.
Ongoing Insurance Accounts⚓︎
- State Farm has all of our car and house and umbrella insurances
- Aetna Health Insurance
- The insurance is through my job as you know. Speak with the Benefits Office to understand how to move forward.
Credit Cards and Loans⚓︎
- Chase
- Two credit cards, both of which can be found in my wallet.
- Capital One
- A debit card, also can be found in my wallet.
Cell Phone & Internet⚓︎
- Our cell phones are through Google Fi and are paid for with the credit card for our joint account.
- There is no contract and everything is on a month-to-month basis.
- Internet is through Verizon FiOS. There is also no contract and everything is on a month-to-month basis.
Tech⚓︎
This section covers the topics that will help you access my emails and website logins. It'll also let you know who to give my tech things to or who to ask for help when something breaks.
Password Manager⚓︎
Bitwarden - you already know how to use this since we've incorporated it into our lives. There are additional details for accessing my password vault, primarily having to do with the vault being protected with 2FA. These details can be found on the account access page.
My password will be written down and stored in the safe in the garage.
Emails⚓︎
Important
Nearly all emails going to my gmail account are encrypted and cannot be accessed in any meaningful way through gmail.com. In order to view these emails, either use eM Client on my Mac or FairEmail on my phone.
As you know, I primarily use dave@davelevine.io, which is a custom domain I have through ProtonMail. You can login to ProtonMail through my phone or laptop and manage this domain.
Note
Although the dave@davelevine.io email address is a custom domain through ProtonMail, it is tied to the real ProtonMail email address, which is dave.levine87@protonmail.com.
Keep my phone and laptop until you haven't used them for a year just in case a 2FA (multi-factor authentication) issue comes up.
I use a service called SimpleLogin that creates email addresses that route emails to my primary email address. I have an email alias (address) for nearly every service that is used. All email aliases are sent to the following real email addresses:
2FA⚓︎
Fortunately, you're familiar with this. This is "Two factor authentication" or "2FA" or "Multi factor authentication" or "MFA". They all mean the same thing.
- I use two MFA apps on my phone:
- Bitwarden
- Nearly all services requiring 2FA are stored in Bitwarden.
- Duo Mobile
- This is used for nearly anything work related. If you need help, The Service Desk will work with you as needed.
- Bitwarden
- Some accounts like banking apps require my phone number for SMS authentication.
- I don't have any 2FA connected to my Google Voice number, but just in case, the number is (516) 253-6643. The app is on my phone and can be used as needed.
- Keep using Bitwarden for your own accounts when you can.
Domains⚓︎
- All of my domains are managed via Porkbun and Cloudflare.
- Both services renew domains automatically since I've enabled this functionality and have payment information stored with both companies.
- At the time of this writing, all domains hosted on Cloudflare and approximately ⅔ of domains hosted on Porkbun have been renewed through 2032.
- Porkbun has a Visa credit card on file that's valid through 06/29. It should be updated as needed.
- Cloudflare uses PayPal as the default payment method with a backup of my Visa credit card that's valid through 11/27. PayPal withdraws from my checking account by default so as long as the account is funded, there should be no issues.
- Both services renew domains automatically since I've enabled this functionality and have payment information stored with both companies.
Danger
The following domains should under no circumstances be sold or allowed to lapse in payment.
- davelevine.io - used for primary email address and tied to numerous services.
- encoded.org - used as my email alias for nearly every service.
- jacksonlevine.com - bought to give to Jackson.
- levine.io - should be passed down to Jackson & Sienna one day.
- levine.org - should be passed down to Jackson & Sienna one day.
- mariasicuranza.com - bought for Maria.
-
siennalevine.com - bought to give to Sienna.
Danger
- nsf.net - the third .net domain ever created. Was created by the National Science Foundatin (NSF) in 1986 and is without question the most valuable domain I own. A truly historical collectors item that should never be sold or allowed to lapse.
The rest of the domains within Porkbun and Cloudflare can be sold. Don't let them lapse if you can avoid it as most of them can fetch good money when sold.
Subscriptions⚓︎
I keep my list of subscriptions up to date in two locations for redundancy:
- https://subs.levine.io (only accessible while connected to Tailscale)
- An app on my Macbook Pro called Subtrack
Some of these can just be cancelled, while others should absolutely be kept. While I intend to keep this up to date, it may lapse at any point, so refer to credit card statements and/or my email if need be.
Cloud Subscriptions⚓︎
Important
SUPER IMPORTANT because these bills can really add up.
- Backblaze - use my credentials in Bitwarden to log into Backblaze and manage accordingly. There is a credit card on file that bills automatically, but will need to be updated at some point. This can be cancelled. At the time of this writing, the following is being used:
- B2 storage for some miscellaneous files for my portfolio site.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) - this can be cancelled. Log into this with the credentials in Bitwarden titled "Amazon Web Services (Root)". This account manages everything and supercedes any other account I used for anything. Pay anything remaining and close the account. You can always reach out to AWS Support for any steps that need to be taken.
- Hetzner - this has my cloud server, which doesn't contain anything critical. The account can be paid and closed.
Online Storage & Photo Backups⚓︎
Photo Backups⚓︎
Danger
Don't just close the account though as you will lose the photos.
All photos are backed up with Google Photos automatically, as you know. Additionally, all photos are backed with Immich automatically. If Immich stopped working, it's not the end of the world but is useful in case of any issues with your Google account.
Local Storage & Backups⚓︎
Everything is backed up to my NAS, which is also backed up nightly to my off-site NAS at Harold's. As you know, it's on top of the shelf in the office.
Important
Before moving either NAS, it should always be completed turned off and unplugged. Be careful of the hard drives within as they should not sustain any direct hits or drops from anything. Also, never remove any drives while the NAS is turned on as it can result in data loss.
This has a ton of stuff on it so whatever you do, don't just throw it in the trash.
- You can login to the web portal; username and password are in Bitwarden.
-
From here, you can view/download individual files, change the password etc.
Wireless Network⚓︎
- The wifi comes from the 4x Ubiquiti Access Points located in the bedroom, the den, the garage, and the one on the ceiling downstairs.
- As long as the pfSense (brand: Netgate) router and the Ubiquiti 48 port switch in the network closet are on and working, there will almost certainly be wifi. If not, restart pfSense. The switch will likely not be the problem.
- If all else fails, just replace it with something easy. If you move to a smaller place, you can just use the wifi router from the ISP.
Restarting Network Services⚓︎
- If the Internet goes out, restart pfSense (generally takes around 3-5 mins to come up). If that doesn't work, unplug it physically, then physically plug it back in.
- If that doesn't work, unplug the power cable that's connected to the network rack. Wait around 10 minutes or so to ensure everything comes back up.
-
If that doesn't work either, it's likely an issue with Verizon and they can be called to troubleshoot if you feel like getting your hands dirty.
Homelabs⚓︎
Extremely Important
- DO NOT SELL ANYTHING WITHOUT FORMATTING OR DESTROYING DISKS. This could be an identity theft disaster.
- UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should the Synology NAS be sold or given away.
- Most of the hardware can be either sold or given to any of the following people:
- Kyle Pelletier (can likely assist with technical questions)
- Jae Suk Yang (solid guy and would definitely take any stuff off your hands)
- Steven Quinn (can likely assist with any technical questions)
- Hang onto my Mac and use for your own, or format it and sell it.
- Needs formatting AND you will need to follow instructions from Apple to disconnect it from Find My or anyone buying it will be prevented from using it.
- Don't give away my laptop or phone until at least a year after you think you don't need them.
- My Synology NAS contains A LOT of stuff such as backups, Plex library, entire Google Photos backups for myself, Maria, and Harold, etc.
- At the time of this writing, it can be reached at https://192.168.1.6:5001.
- Username, password, and if necessary, exact URL, can be found in Bitwarden.
Home Automation / Internet of Things (IoT)⚓︎
If you change the name of the wifi (like if you move and use the ISP's built-in wifi), then you will have to reconnect:
- Hue Bridge
- If the Hue lights break, check the Hue Bridge in the network closet; it's a little white square. You probably just need to restart it by unplugging it and waiting around 30 seconds.
- Roku's and the Fire stick in the bedroom
- Ivideon cameras
- Any other devices that use wifi
The two wifi names at the time of this writing are dd-wrt and dd-wrt_backup. If you use either of those with a new router, you won't need to do anything; the devices will automatically reconnect. I also have a test wifi name called All-Things-Distributed, which you can safely ignore.
Social Media Accounts⚓︎
- Everything can be logged in with Bitwarden and the multi-factor apps on my phone (Bitwarden and if needed, Duo Mobile for work stuff).
- Close my LinkedIn; it won't be of any use.
Websites⚓︎
-
Any websites I manage are hosted through either Cloudflare or Vercel.
- My knowledge base is hosted on Cloudflare so I'd recommend not getting rid of that account until you're sure you don't need anything from it anymore.
- A number of domains currently live on Cloudflare as well. Reference the Domains section above. Transfer them out accordingly if you plan on closing the account.
- Otherwise, there really isn't much of value hosted on either Cloudflare or Vercel. You can take a look through them if you want to make sure, then close the account(s) when you're ready.
Tech Tips⚓︎
Important
Do not EVER sell anything with a hard drive without formatting the hard drives first. If it can't be sold, it should be incinerated or at minimum, the center of the drive should be drilled into in order to destroy the insides of the drive.
